The Bull & Last, Highgate
One of my favourite websites to look for boutique hotel stays is Mr and Mrs Smith. Not only are the properties on the website extremely picturesque but you also tend to get a freebie thrown in if you book through their website (and who doesn’t love a freebie?).
The Bull and Last is a hotel I spotted whilst searching through the Mr and Mrs Smith website under the ’Most Popular Hotels in the UK’ tab. Intrigued, I booked the Keats Room for a one night stay to see what all the fuss was about and headed off to London with my partner in tow.
Not sponsored or an affiliate of Mr and Mrs Smith, just a huge fan who wanted to share their amazing website.

How many Rooms at the Bull & Last? There are seven rooms in total, all beautifully decorated and inspired by Hampstead Heath. The rooms are: Somerset, Keats, Dido, Faraday, Mansfield, Gotto & Ellis.
Dog friendly? Dogs are welcome on the ground floor however, they are not permitted in any of the rooms.
Dress Code: Dress up to the nine’s or walk around in your mud-flecked wellies. Everyone is welcome.
The Keats Room
The room was absolutely beautiful with each room in the building inspired by the local town’s history.
‘Dido’ is named after the slave daughter turned heiress Dido Belle who grew up in Kenwood House, ‘Ellis’ is named after Ruth Ellis, the last woman hanged in Britain for shooting her husband dead down the road from the Magdala Tavern whilst my room and my room, the ’Keats’ is named after John Keats, the poet who lived in Hampstead Heath.
His book is framed against the wall as a subtle nod to the poet.
The Bull & Last’s guestbook is placed neatly on the desk, disguised as the Bull and Last Cook Book.
Cookies were kindly left on our bed upon arrival with a hand written welcome note and a map of the area for those individuals who want to explore.
The Bar
Tip: Book a room using the Mr and Mrs Smith website and receive a free drink each from the Bar Selection.
The bar on the ground floor gave a moody, sexy atmosphere for its guests whilst the staff were friendly and welcoming and always on the ball in terms of service.
For Starters, We ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Aioli (£11.00)
Sadly, it wasn’t my favourite dish and I personally wouldn’t order it again.
North Essex Shorthorn Sirloin, Béarnaise, Green Salad & Chips (£35.00)
The steak however, was incredible & cooked beautifully.
Mint Choc Chip Ice Cream (I think £3/£4).
Not your normal Mint Choc Chip, the ice cream tasted more like a herbal mint & I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a homemade dish.
The Next Morning - Breakfast in Bed
The next morning, we heard a light knock on our door - 9am on the dot, just as we requested. In walks a lovely gentleman with our breakfast platter. A mixture of fruit, granola, toast and preserves. Nothing too fancy but something healthy to kick start our morning.
Sadly, I noticed on the website that the company is no longer offering breakfast currently.
Upon departure, we spoke to the staff and thanked them for our stay. As we were about to leave, we were asked if we’d like to take a coffee with us for the walk and we kindly accepted.
We were under the impression that this was a kind gesture which came with our breakfast package however, we were mistaken and we did have to pay ( just something to bare in mind if the same thing happens to you).
Overall, the staff were incredible and super friendly whilst the room was beautifully designed. Although Hampstead Heath gives many Londoners a spot away from the hustle and bustle, there isn’t much to do in the area. It’s perfect for those individuals who want to take their dogs to the city as there are some beautiful parks and areas which your four-legged friend would love, however, I do think the Bull and Last are missing a trick here as I do believe dog lovers would be their biggest clientele for an overnight stay.
